Restoring Function and Confidence: A Complex Wrist Reconstruction by Dr Sarah Murgatroyd

Dr Sarah Murgatroyd, Orthopaedic Surgeon and founder of Moreton Bay Orthopaedic Practice (MBOP), recently shared a remarkable case highlighting the depth of her subspecialty experience in upper limb surgery.

“Grateful to share a recent case that brought together multiple subspecialty skills learned over the years—to help a patient with significant wrist deformity regain not only wrist function but also comfort, confidence, and independence.” — Dr Sarah Murgatroyd

Wrist Reconstruction by Dr. Sarah Murgatroyd

This challenging wrist reconstruction required a combination of advanced surgical techniques and careful multidisciplinary thinking:

  • Deformity correction, drawing on Dr Sarah’s paediatric upper limb experience

  • Targeted nerve releases to restore sensation

  • Tendon transfer to recover dynamic function

  • Meticulous tissue handling to protect healing

  • Use of the MotecWrist internal fusion system, keeping hardware within the wrist to minimise skin and tendon irritation

The outcome was a functional, sensate, and cosmetically acceptable hand—and, most importantly, a very happy patient.

“These are the cases that make me think. They challenge me, and they give me great joy. It's such a privilege to help people move better and feel better.”

  • Distal radio-ulnar joint (Scheker) replacement, a specialised technique that restores forearm rotation—particularly beneficial for patients with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or long-term wrist instability
